I currently have the archos 5 IMT (160gig) unit. I’m happy with this one, except for a major detail. I can’t view any flash video unless it’s fired off into it’s own page. I’d like to know if this new Archos 5 (w/android) will do better? Otherwise there’s no reason for me to dump my current Archos 5, to get the Android Archos 5, unless that issue is resolved.

I purchased one of the predecessors to this device, the 605WiFi with 160GB Hard drive. Within one year the battery needed to be replaced. This was still under warranty but I had to send the device in. When I get the item back, It is missing a screw. I don’t make a thing about it but about 6 months later, the hard drive dies. They wont provide instruction on replacing the hard drive yourself and since it was out of warranty, they wanted over a hundred dollars to fix it. Or they would give you a cupon off the newer model. Since the devices don’t seem to have high quality materials and workmanship, I would not want to shell out more cash for something that will likely only last a year or two. Just not worth the money.
The devices usually only handle a minimum of file formats. If you want to play others, you have to spend money on plugins. I spent over $60 on plugins that are not transferable to a new unit. I also bought external battery pack and DVR unit, total over $100 dollars more. They are also not compatible with the newer devices.
Not worth the money.

Save your money, the product is not ready for the real world. Company support is terrible. It took two weeks to get a response and they couldn’t provide any advice. Their answer was to exchange the product with Amazon, which I did and the second sucks just as much as the first. No more useful than a smartphone.

Alright, lets get something straight people. The Archos 5 Android is a product out on the market for the non picky people. If your use to paying a large amount of cash for a device that currently changes every 3 months(Apple), stick with them. The Archos is more for the people who don’t expect the world in it. For the more people who are civilize, and dont get caught up on into the “HYPE” of these other bull “BEEP” products. The Archos devices has always been for the more Professional type people, who enjoyed viewing there documents on the go. who elso enjoy the massive storage space for an outstanding price. So for all those critics out there who cant handle the many features cause there mind is use to just handling the basic features of your normal every day MP3 players……….. please, give it a rest.
But on the other hand, the Archos 5 Android is SOOOOOOOOO HOT!

I bought this for my wife, I bought the Zune HD last month and she wanted something similiar but with a larger screen. We debated between a netbook and this and finally decided to go with the android archos. First of all the screen is not as smooth as the Zune HD, so your finger doesn’t move smoothly. The interface is confusing as well, but we figured it just takes time to get use to. My biggest issue is it freezes up and has to be reset. We tried brousing the web and it would lock up. Then we tried playing a movie and it needed some codec that they wanted us to buy. I mean we just blew 400 on this and they are already trying to nickle and dime us. I shouldn’t have to keep resetting a new device, I can only imagine going forward. I’m returning this garbage for another Zune HD. The Zune might not do as much but I never had to reset it yet either. I’ll never buy an Archos product again.
UPDATE!
Just wanted to pass this on. My neighbor bought the 32 gig version a few days after me from another seller. He loved what the device is suppose to do and wanted to give it more time. Well he’s done the firmware updates and it’s still crashing and freezing up. He tried for hours to load the GPS and it froze everytime. Whenever he tries to connect to the internet it freezes and has to be reset. He’s finally had it and is returning it before his 30 day no questions asked period expires. This device is garbage we can’t believe a company would release such junk for sale. We both agree we would never consider an Archos product again. Like I said I bought a Zune HD and true it doesn’t do as much but after 5 weeks it has never froze or givin me a problem. Archos needs to take some lessons from other companies.
